When buying cherries, keep an eye out for cherries with the stems still attached as it keeps them fresher longer. Refrigerate or freeze your cherries and are best washed just prior to eating!
Cherry trees are often planted in rows in orchards and a single cherry tree can grow for many years before it will actually bear fruit. The growing process may vary depending on the cherry variety being grown, but they require relatively the same care. Similar to berries, cherry trees will bud and produce flowers. Pollination is critical for the growth of cherries, especially that of honey bees. After the petals have fallen and the tree has been pollinated, immature fruit can take about a month to form on the tree. From there, farmers wait until their variety of cherry is the perfect shade of red and then they harvest.
